Description | Tetanus is a serious, often fatal intoxication caused by infection of Clostridium tetani, a gram-positive bacterium, through cuts or wounds. Mortality rate among untreated patients is high. Tetanus affects the muscles and nerves and manifests as muscle spasms in the jaw (lockjaw). Tetanus can be prevented by getting the tetanus vaccine. |
