The polyprotein is further dissected into two bitopic polypeptides, the mature PsbY-A1, a central domain being removed, and the mature PsbY-A2. PsbY-A1 and A2 share high similarity suggesting an internal gene duplication. The polypeptides are associated with photosystem II and arranged in an N-in, C-out orientation. A similar PsbY precursor leading to two bitopic proteins after maturation is also present in Arabidopsis thaliana (GenBank Accession Numbers AF079800 and AJ223306), while the plastid chromosomes of Cyanophora paradoxa, Odontella sinensis, Porphyra purpurea (ycf32), and Cyanidium caldarium (ORF8) as well as the genomic DNA of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803 (sml0007) contain a gene encoding only one bitopic protein.
